Mission and Vision
Emerging Academic Fields
Cohort Community

Emerging fields of inquiry are those areas of study that evolve as the breadth of human knowledge and understanding expands. Emerging fields are developed as transdisciplinary study that generates new knowledge at the convergence of two or more traditional academic disciplines. Such knowledge is often divergent from mainstream ideologies and often reflects shifting world views as a result of  significant contemporary issues.

Emerging fields of inquiry are identified as distinct, organized areas of study that can be articulated and authenticated through research and dissemination. They often appear before they can be fully described or understood. Thus, study in emerging fields serves as the critical connection between discovering new knowledge and intellectual and cultural development.

Quantum mechanics is a recent example. Though it was grounded in established areas of study (philosophy, mathematics, and classical physics), quantum mechanics challenged early-twentieth century logic. Indeed, quantum theory was not a conceptual possibility before Bohr, Einstein, and Heisenburg published their seminal works on connectivity and relativity. After only twenty years of rigorous scholarship, however, quantum mechanics was embraced throughout the academic community. It revolutionized humankind's view of a participatory universe and prompted the leap toward a postmodern ideology.

The Institute is invested in the belief that transdisciplinary scholarship brings about new knowledge greater than each of its parts. We are committed to creating Master of Arts degree programs in emerging fields with an appropriate methodology for learning and teaching.

The Graduate Institute's degree programs in emerging fields include:

The Master of Arts in Conscious Evolution Scholarship in Conscious Evolution considers the resources and potentials for evolutionary progress within both individual and global contexts. It provides crucial understanding about the complex relationship between human and natural systems.

The Master of Arts in Experiential Health and Healing Scholarship in Experiential Health and Healing facilitates the development of a comprehensive, holistic model of health, and leads to informed, insightful, and empathetic practice of a diverse range of healing modalities.

The Master of Arts in Learning and Thinking Scholarship in Learning and Thinking creates innovative strategies for overcoming personal barriers to learning and teaching, and has the potential to revolutionize existing educational models.

The Master of Arts in Conflict Transformation Scholarship in Conflict Transformation takes the traditional peace studies approach to the next level; it develops a transformative model of peace-building and creates opportunities to pilot local initiatives that respond to pressing global leaves.
