The Integrative Health and Healing certificate program examines health as the optimal alignment of body, mind, and spirit – not merely the absence of disease. It provides the opportunity for students to explore contemporary, mind/body approaches to health and well-being under the support of forward-thinking practitioners and researchers. Self-contained, the program also satisfies the requirements for 9 credits toward the Master of Arts degree in Integrative Health and Healing offered by TGI. Thus, qualified students who complete the certificate may matriculate into the MA program with 9 credits.

Over the course of ten months, a cohort of students meets monthly (Friday from 5 to 9 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm) to explore aspects of integrative medicine. Students engage in dialogue with fellow cohort members and faculty to develop a body of work in their electronic portfolio. Hands-on experiences with different modalities and treatment methods strengthen understanding, and the program's multiple approaches to instruction ensures that students of diverse learning styles are empowered to incorporate their knowledge effectively. 


Each class in the certificate program in Integrative Health and Healing is dedicated to a comprehensive examination of specific protocols and practices, including:

  • Allopathy (traditional Western medicine) in the context of integrative models
  • Holistic Medical Model
  • Mind-Body Medicine (Including Psycho-neuro-endocrine-immune connection PNEI)
  • Integrative Nutrition
  • Homeopathic remedies and diagnostic methods
  • Naturopathic medical philosophy and practice
  • Meditation and Internal Energy Development - Qi Gong
  • Herbal Medicinals, Nutraceuticals and Flower Essences

Courses (9 credits)

IH 501:    Foundations of Integrative Health and Healing                                         3 credits

This course introduces students to the major health and healing traditions, and explores their diverse philosophical and practical foundations. Students examine the ancient healing arts, as well as the allopathic, complementary, and alternative practices that have evolved from them. Study emphasizes the need to gain knowledge in various modalities, to integrate diverse perspectives on how the body functions, and to develop a holistic medical model in order to achieve health and wellness.
 
IH 502:    Mind-Body Medicine                                                                                     2 credits

Infused with mind, spirit, and energy, the body is so much more than the sum of its physiological parts. In this course, students explore psycho-neural immunology research that demonstrates how the mind-body relationship affects health and healing. Study provides a comprehensive understanding of wellness and preventative practices, such as meditation, relaxation, biofeedback, visualization, guided imagery, hypnosis, dream analysis, psychotherapies, and addiction rehabilitation.

IH 507:    Integrative Nutrition                                                                                    2 credits

A central tenet of holism is that health evolves within a broader context of ecological and cultural practices, and it is impossible to separate individual health from the health of the whole system. In this course, students explore this “whole systems” metaphor, examining the impact of ecological and cultural practices on broad health related issues. Specifically, diet and nutrition, water purity, and air quality are studied relative to their impact on health and wellness.

IH 509:     Alternative Pharmaceuticals: Aromatherapy and Flower Essences            2 credits

Allopathic medicine has long relied upon the use of drugs to treat disease. Allopathic pharamaceuticals, however, are not the only substances that have provided extraordinary healing and curative effects throughout history. In this course, allopathic pharmaceuticals are compared to herbal remedies, Chinese medicines, and neutraceuticals. Students analyze the pharmacological effects of various substances by reviewing clinical research, case studies, and other indicators of efficacy. Substances are examined in terms of their healing, preventative, and vitalizing effects.

Artemis Morris, ND

Biography

Dr.Artemis Morris is a Naturopathic Physician, Licensed Acupuncturist, professor of nutrition, researcher, author, and consultant in natural medicine, and is a faculty member of The Graduate Institute. She completed her Naturopathic Doctorate and Masters in Acupuncture at Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Artemis is the medical director and founder of Revive Wellness Center, a multidisciplinary collaborative practice in New Haven, CT and has a private practice in Milford, CT. She served as the director of the natural health center at Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford, the largest geriatric healthcare center in CT. Dr. Artemis teaches clinical nutrition at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine and is a consultant for Bioimmesion, a nutriceutical company. Dr. Artemis has been researching the Mediterranean Diet and plants of Crete since 2005 and has lectured on Traditional Chinese Medicine, botanical medicine and various natural health topics. She authored the book with Molly Rossiter on The Anti-Inflammation Diet for Dummies and is working on her book on The Mediterranean Diet and other writing projects. Her practice philosophy is inspired by the quote from Paracelsus that states, "The art of healing comes from nature and not from the physician. Therefore, the physician must start from nature with an open mind."

    J. David Forbes, MD

Biography

J. David Forbes, MD, ABIHM, is the Founder and Director of Nashville Integrated Medicine. In addition to his practice in Nashville, he served past President of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA).  David received his MD from the University of Tennessee at Memphis in 1990. In the year 2000 he became a board-certified Founding Diplomate of the American Board of Integrated Holistic Medicine (ABIHM), one of only a handful of board-certified holistic practitioners currently in Tennessee. Required training for doctors board-certified in Holistic Medicine includes natural, herbal, nutritional, body/mind, emotional and spiritual approaches to healing and their integration with traditional medicine. He has also practiced primary care medicine at the Lewis Ambulatory Care Center in Hohenwald, TN. During his years in ER, he pursued further study and education in various fields of integrative medicine. He is fully trained in PEER® Therapy (Primary Emotional Energy Recovery) by the founders Dan Jones and John Lee, and has continued study under their tutelage since 1993. On a more personal level he has cultivated a meditation-based spiritual practice for over 20 years that involves working with the energy of the body, developing intuitive skills, and allowing internal spiritual energy to guide the healing process.   David frequently serves as a consultant to businesses by developing ways to promote real health change in the workplace.


  Bernie Siegel, MD

Biography

Bernie Siegel, M.D. excelled at Colgate University and Cornell University Medical College. He completed his surgical residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. While a pediatric and general surgeon in New Haven, he authored Love, Medicine and Miracles: Lessons Learned About Self-Healing from a Surgeon's Experience with Exceptional Patients, Humor and Healing, and Meditations for Difficult Times. He founded the Exceptional Cancer Patients therapy and healing program in New Haven in 1978. His book Prescriptions for Living was published by Harper Collins in 1998.  Bernie's insights on the nature of human experience and the science of medicine are integrated in his unique approach to the practice of healing, and in his view of storytelling and visual arts as paths for creating wellness.  His latest book, The Art of Healing (2013), reveals his insights into the healing power of drawings, dreams, and intuition.  Visit his website at berniesiegelmd.com.

Biography

Paula Sutliffe earned her RN degree from the United Hospital School for Nursing in Port Chester, NY, and holds a Master of Arts in Experiential Health and Healing from The Graduate Institute. Her experience ranges from Manager of Health Systems at Procter & Gamble in Stamford, CT, to Faculty Associate at Sacred Heart University, to Private Duty Nursing at Greenwich Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Registry, to Assistant Director of Nursing at Nathaniel Witherell, to holding several positions at the United Hospital in Port Chester, NY. Her accomplishments include: Board President at the Stamford Emergency Medical Services, President and Board of Directors at Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic, Corporate Relations Committee for the Connecticut American Red Cross, and Corporate Sponsor and Site Chairman for the Susan G. Komen Foundation Race for the Cure.

Susan Moore Strickland, MA, is a former student of the Integrative Health and Healing Master of Arts Degree program at The Graduate Institute. Susan has more than 30 years’ experience in marketing and television production, fundraising and event management, and she is the former Publisher of M.D. News Magazine. In addition, Susan’s experience includes an Internship at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital as an Art Leader in the Arts for Healing Program, and, leading art workshops for Hartford Hospital. Susan is deeply committed to guiding students to become more aware, inspired and empowered people; to be more self-sufficient in healing themselves, and in healing others.

Gene Ang, PhD
Biography

Gene Ang, PhD runs a healing practice based at the Mind Body Spirit Center in Westlake Village, CA and sees clients for Pranic Healing, Reconnective Healing, and the Reconnection. He teaches a number of seminars and workshops that focus on the integration of science, spirituality, and healing. Gene was formally trained as a Neurobiologist at Yale University, where he earned his PhD in basic mechanisms of brain development, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship on the effects of ultrasound on the developing cerebral cortex. After completing his post-doctoral fellowship, Gene decided to take on the role as a facilitator for healing through energy medicine. His work centers around aligning the subtle energy body and its channels, meridians, and energy centers to help restore balance and harmony so that healing can occur -- whether it be physical, emotional, mental, and/or spiritual healing.

Lilly Marie Blecher, ND
Biography

Lilly Marie Blecher earned her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine as well as her Master of Science in Oriental Medicine at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. A native of New York City, she completed her residency in Family Medicine at Natural Health Associates. Lilly's 10 year apprenticeship in Traditional Chinese Medicine, her extensive work in community health clinics, and her teaching experience afford her a unique and outstanding perspective on health care. As a Naturopathic physician, she is experienced in treating most health conditions, but is especially focused on treating diabetes, addiction, and women's health.

Bhaswati Bhattacharya, MD
Biography

Dr. Bhaswati Bhattacharya is trained as a biomedical scientist, international public health specialist, and primary care clinician. She currently practices and teaches in New York City, and is board-certified in holistic medicine and preventive medicine. Bhaswati also serves as Director of the Dinacharya Institute in New York, leading workshops, seminars, and training programs for Ayurvedic Health Coaches. She was trained at the University of Pennsylvania in the Biological Basis of Behavior and holds a Master's degree in Pharmacology and Neuroscience from Columbia University and a Masters in International Public Health (MPH) from Harvard University. Bhaswati continues to serve the holistic community by providing workshops internationally and engaging in medical education projects and public health consulting assignments. Her role at The Graduate Institute focuses on the philosophy and integration of Ayurvedic Medicine through a Biomedical Model.

Biography

Denise Romano is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner whose professional experience includes family medicine, holistic health, and comprehensive women’s health. She currently serves as a Family Nurse Practitioner in the Substance Abuse Treatment Research Unit at the Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Psychology. Denise holds a Master of Arts in Experiential Health and Healing from The Graduate Institute, and a Master of Science in Nursing from Pace University/NY Medical College. Previous positions include family practice and clinical ecology at The Gesell Institute and Clinic Coordinator of Planned Parenthood of VA Beach, where she held an Adjunct Faculty position at Old Dominion University. She also holds certification as an Acupuncture Detox Specialist and has completed a 4 year program in Energy Medicine.

Steven Horowitz, MD
Biography

As Chief of Cardiology (Stamford Hospital, Stamford, CT), Dr. Steven Horowitz has undertaken the development of an exceptional complementary and experiential model of cardiac care. He received his MD at New York Medical College and currently serves as Director of the Integrative Cardiology program at Stamford Hospital’s Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness. Having expanded this model to embrace diverse areas of medicine, he teaches and leads healthcare professionals in seeking new perspectives in integrative healing. Steve serves on the Board of Directors for Stamford Hospital’s Planetree Alliance, an organization dedicated to humanistic and patient-centered care. He was recently honored with the Planetree Alliance’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to cardiac health.

Joan Palmer, MS
Biography

Joan Palmer is the founder and director of The Institute Of Sustainable Nutrition, an innovative model for nutrition education, and owner of Real Food Matters, LLC. She has been spreading the seeds of Real Food Matters for more than a decade through counseling and presenting educational programs to schools, businesses, organizations, families, and individuals. She has been growing and using herbs and kitchen medicine since the 1990s. In 2011, Joan received her Certification in Herbology from Rosemary Gladstar, the godmother of the herbal renaissance in America. Caroline Myss, PhD
Biography

Caroline Myss is a five-time New York Times bestselling author and internationally renowned speaker in the fields of human consciousness, spirituality and mysticism, health, energy medicine, and the science of medical intuition. Myss established her own educational institute in 2003, CMED (Caroline Myss Education), which offers a diverse array of programs devoted to personal development and draws students from all over the world. In addition to hosting a weekly radio show on the Hay House network, she maintains a rigorous international workshop and lecture schedule. After completing her Master's degree, Myss co-founded Stillpoint Publishing and headed the editorial department, producing an average of ten books a year in the field of human consciousness and holistic health. Perry Perretz, DO
Biography

Perry Perretz practices pain medicine, neuromusculoskeletal medicine, and physical medicine and rehabilitation in Redding, Connecticut. He is a graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed his post-graduate residency at the University of Chicago. His work at The Graduate Institute focuses on understanding the biophysics of energy medicine.

Brian Luke Seaward, PhD
Biography

Brian Luke Seaward is a renowned and respected international expert in the fields of stress management, mind-body-spirit healing and corporate health promotion. He is respected throughout the international community as an accomplished teacher, consultant, motivational speaker, author, award-winning filmmaker, visionary, and mentor. James Sensenig, ND
Biography

James Sensenig has been practicing Naturopathic Medicine for nearly thirty years, having helped thousands of people regain their health. He is particularly interested in the treatment of digestive diseases, headaches and migraine, joint and muscle complaints, and chronic fatigue. He also sees children with health problems ranging from asthma and eczema to developmental delays and autism. Jim graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon where he later served as Dean of Education. He was the founding President of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the Chairman of its Government Affairs Committee for a decade, and the founding Dean of the College of Naturopathic Medicine at the University of Bridgeport (Connecticut). He is on the faculty of the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona and the University of Bridgeport, College of Naturopathic Medicine.

C. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD
Biography

C. Norman Shealy attended medical school at Duke University in Durham, NC and completed graduate study at the Humanistic Psychology Institute (Saybrook Institute). He is currently President of Holos Institute of Health, President of Holos University Graduate School, Professor Emeritus of Energy Medicine at Greenwich University, and was the Founding President of the American Holistic Medical Association. Norm is one of the world's leading experts in pain management. He was among the first physicians to specialize in the resolution of chronic pain. A pioneer in developing safe and effective treatments such as Biogenics, he founded the first comprehensive pain and stress management facility in the country, The Shealy Institute. Tuition and Fees

Tuition for Master of Arts Degree Programs

Total tuition for each 36-credit MA program is $15,408, at $428 per credit. A one-time, non-refundable, application fee of $60 – and a program fee of $385 – are also required. The graduation fee is $90.

After paying the application fee of $60, MA students pay a deposit of $483 upon acceptance or conditional acceptance to the program. Students then make 20 monthly payments of $770, which includes the program fee of $385 and the graduation fee of $90. The total of all tuition and fees is $15,943.

Tuition for Certificate Programs

Tuition for certificate programs is $428 per credit. A one-time, non-refundable, application fee of $60 – and a program fee of $195 – are also required. The graduation fee is $90.

After paying the $60 Application fee, Certificate students pay as follows:

12-Credit Certificate Program students pay a deposit of $521 upon acceptance or conditional acceptance to the program. Students then make 7 monthly payments of $700, which includes the program fee of $195 and the graduation fee of $90. The total of all tuition and fees is $5,481. If the student decides to matriculate to an MA program, the student will pay $1,222 in the 8th month, followed by 12 monthly payments of $770. (Certificates in Ecotherapy, Applied Storytelling, and Positive Psychology)

11-Credit Certificate Program students pay a deposit of $793 upon acceptance or conditional acceptance to the program. Students then make 6 monthly payments of $700 which includes the program fee of $195 and the graduation fee of $90. The total of all tuition and fees is $5,053. If the student decides to matriculate to an MA program, the student will pay $880 in the 7th month, followed by 13 monthly payments of $770. (Certificate in Integrative Energy and Eastern Medicine)

9-Credit Certificate Program students pay a deposit of $637 upon acceptance or conditional acceptance to the program. Students then make 5 monthly payments of $700 which includes the program fee of $195 and the graduation fee of $90. The total of all tuition and fees is $4,197. If the student decides to matriculate to an MA program, the student will pay $966 in the 6th month, followed by 14 monthly payments of $770. (Certificate in Integrative Health and Healing)

6-Credit Certificate Program students pay a deposit of $753 upon acceptance or conditional acceptance to the program. Students then make 3 monthly payments of $700 which includes the program fee of $195 and the graduation fee of $90. The total of all tuition and fees is $2,913. If the student decides to matriculate to an MA program, the student will pay $710 in the 4th month, followed by 16 monthly payments of $770. (Certificate in Consciousness, Transformation and Mindfulness)

Tuition for Coaching Program

Tuition for the Transformative Coaching program is $ 3,168 which includes three one-on-one mentor coaching sessions with Guthrie Sayen, PCC. 

A one-time, non-refundable, application fee of $60 is also required. 

Students pay a deposit of $918 after acceptance to the program. Students then make 3 monthly payments of $750.

In addition, Non-TGI costs associated with the acquisition of the ICF ACC coaching credential are:

  ICF membership dues paid directly to the ICF $245
  ICF exam fee, member rate, paid directly to the ICF $300

NOTE: Admission to the Transformative Coach Training program only requires a completed Application form, the application fee of $60, and Proof of Immunization.

Enrollment Dates

All of The Graduate Institute's programs operate via a cohort model, which means you will join a group of approximately 12-15 students and complete the entire program of study as a cohesive learning community. We are continually starting new cohorts as existing cohorts become filled. 

Most of our programs begin in the fall (September/October), although certain Master of Arts degrees and certificate programs are also available in the spring (April/May) of each year. Please check back frequently for new cohort start dates.

Student Loan Opportunities

Students may apply for Connecticut state loans through the Connecticut Higher Education Supplemental Loan Authority (CHESLA), which offers low-fixed-interest-rate loans, with no application fees. Applicants – or co-applicants, if any – must have a minimum $20,000 gross annual income, and monthly loan installment payments must amount to 40% or less of monthly gross income. Students may defer interest while in school and for a 6-month grace period (interest is capitalized annually). The CALS Graduate Institute School Code is 117777-00. Alumni Partial Tuition Waiver 

An alumnus of any of The Graduate Institute's Master of Arts degree programs qualifies for a partial tuition waiver of $2,000 towards another MA degree, or $1,000 towards a Certificate program, or $300 towards the TCT coaching program. 

Tuition Waiver for Six Credits for Educators

Applicants for the spring of 2017 for MA degrees who teach full time in Priority and Alliance School Districts* are eligible for a $2,568 tuition waiver.

Tuition Waiver for up to Six Credits for an MA Program

Master of Arts students may apply for a tuition waiver for up to six (6) credits if they show evidence (official transcript) for credits of graduate study as a non-matriculated student. Requests for this tuition waiver are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The Academic Affairs Committee renders all decisions regarding transfer of credit.
