The program in Irenic Studies is a 36-credit Master of Arts degree initiative (named in honor of the Greek Goddess of Peace, Irene) that focuses on the creation of a peaceful and sustainable world. Its overarching purpose is to shift the paradigm of peace-building from a perspective of conflict resolution to a process of conflict transformation. This approach views conflict as a natural occurrence among individuals involved in relationships. Program participants explore peace-building techniques that may be applied to interpersonal, institutional, governmental and non-governmental, national, and international conflicts. The Irenic Studies program consists of three main components:

  • examination of the theoretical foundations for peace and conflict studies;

  • development of conflict transformation skills; and,

  • design and implementation of a community action initiative.

Throughout the program, Colleagues identify, analyze, and evaluate innovative and proactive solutions to real-world conflict situations. Participants explore the relationship between local and global peace efforts (the micro-macro continuum), and focus their activism (i.e., culminating project) within an area of public service (such as education, human rights, law, environmental or social justice). The program is suitable for individuals interested in Political Sciences, International Studies, and Mediation and Arbitration Studies.
